“BC Housing is applying for a temporary use permit for 440 1st Ave in Ladysmith (Island Hotel). If approved, it will be used as a temporary shelter.
The Ladysmith Resources Centre Association will operate the shelter.
The shelter at 440 1st Ave will:
- Operated and staffed 24/7
- Provide 10 shelter beds
- Provide 2 meals and 1 snack per day
- Follow all COVID safety measures
BC Housing will be mailing letters to neighbours inviting them to an information session to be held virtually on February 10.

The temporary use permit application is valid until February 16, 2022. We anticipate at least a one-year operating period. There is an option to extend beyond this period if needed.
There is a need for safe shelter in Ladysmith. This shelter will provide a safe space during the COVID-19 pandemic for people experiencing homelessness.
