SUMMARY:Understanding Systemic Racism workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Town of Ladysmith is hosting a free two-part cultural awareness workshop series in March for community members to acquire a greater understanding of past historical events and the resulting ongoing impacts for Indigenous peoples. \nFurthermore\, these workshops are an opportunity to create awareness and reduce stigma\, racism and discrimination\, all of which are themes identified in the CommUNITY Together to End Poverty Hw-nuts’-ulwum (As One) Poverty Reduction Strategy. \nThe Quw’utsun’ Cultural Connections Elder team is facilitating the series and have offered the workshops in the region since 2008.  The work was developed for volunteers during the North American Indigenous Games hosted by Cowichan Tribes. \nPart 1 of the series is the Journey of our Generation workshop on Thursday\, March 9th\, from 9am to 3:30pm. The workshop will focus on the systemic impacts of history shared through personal stories from Indigenous Elders who are residential school survivors. Through storytelling\, experiential learning\, role-playing and dialogue\, participants will gain greater cultural sensitivity\, an openness to personal inquiry\, and a strong desire to learn more and how to take action. \nPart 2 of the series is the Understanding Systemic Racism workshop on Thursday\, March 30th\, from 10am to 1pm. This workshop will focus on examining the current reality of the Stz’uminus First Nation and Ladysmith communities\, including how we can all take action in our businesses\, workplaces\, volunteer activities and personal areas of influence to work and live better together\, hw-nuts’-ulwum (as one). \nA prerequisite for registering for Part 2 will be the Journey of our Generation workshop either in March or at a previous time. \nThe workshops have reached more than 15\,000 people in our region and are highly impactful. They are open to the entire community\, including local leaders such as business owners\, School District 68 staff\, RCMP members and employees\, healthcare workers\, service providers. \nThe workshops are subsidized through a $50\,000 grant received by the Town from the Union of BC Municipalities. \nRegistration is required and can be done through our Eventbrite page for Part 1 and Part 2\, or by emailing qccsociety@gmail.com. \nTo learn more about the  CommUNITY Together to End Poverty Hw-nuts’-ulwum (As One) Poverty Reduction Strategy\, please visit: www.ladysmith.ca/povertyreductionstrategy.

SUMMARY:Spring Clean Up set to return April 11-17\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Spring Clean Up set to return April 11-17\, 2023 \n The Town of Ladysmith is excited to announce that our annual Spring Clean Up is scheduled for Tuesday\, April 11-17\, 2023. \nThe bulk item door-to-door pickup carried out by our contractor Waste Connections assists residents with discarding common household items such as furniture\, mattresses\, children’s toys and barbecues. \nAs a sustainability leader\, the Town is pleased to be able to collaborate with residents on reducing the impact solid waste has on our environment. \nSpring Clean Up is limited to the select items listed above due to the sorting requirements to efficiently divert items away from the landfill – taking advantage of initiatives provided by the Cowichan Valley Regional District. \nYou can do your part to help us by sorting items such as metals into one pile. Additionally\, mattresses\, rugs and carpets must be fully contained in plastic and be sealed in order for them to be collected. \nAdditional items placed at the curb during Spring Clean Up will unfortunately not be collected by the Town’s contractor. \nSave the Date \nThe Town and Waste Connections are partnering to bring you a Spring Yard  Waste Pickup during the week of May 15-19\, 2023. \nWatch for more details in the coming weeks. \n
