SUMMARY:Family Day Event at Ladysmith's Historic Waterfront
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, February 21 is BC Family Day and the Ladysmith Maritime Society and the Ladysmith & District Historical Society invite the community to celebrate at their Family Fun on the Waterfront event from 11 – 3 pm. \nKeeping COVID protocols in mind\, most of the events are outdoors at the Ladysmith Community Marina and by the Industrial Heritage site located in the 600 block Oyster Bay Drive. \nThe heritage buildings complex\, formerly part of Comox Logging & Railway Co. now includes the LMS Boat Shed where heritage vessels are restored. The LDHS Workshop is occupied by the impressive Steam Loci 11\, along with other artifacts. You will get a chance to walk through the facilities and watch volunteers at work and ask them questions. \nJust across from the site is the Ladysmith Community Marina. Come down to the docks and visit their floating museum and their heritage boat fleet on display. You’ll get a chance to warm up with some hot chocolate and see what you can discover with their underwater camera. \nDon’t forget to stop at the Ladysmith Train Station before you head out. This building is in the process of being converted to a community space and this is your chance to share your ideas on its possible future. A used book sale by donation will be on the premises. So bring some loose change – it’s for a good cause! \nThis is a free event for all ages with slide shows\, music\, Snack Station\, and a “Take Away” Activity table plus a free booklet based on Ladysmith’s waterfront heritage. \nRemember afterwards to post your photos at #ladysmithheritage and share for a chance to win a prize! \nBC Family Day also kicks off Heritage Week in BC. Follow LMS and LDHS’s Facebook for daily posts and virtual programming all leading up to the big wrap-up on Sunday\, February 27  at 7 pm with the 2022 Ladysmith Heritage Awards. Email info@ladysmithhistoricalsoceity.ca for a link. Zoom in or watch it live-streamed on the LDHS Facebook Group. \nFor more information on BC Family Day or BC Heritage Week\, visit ladysmithhistoricalsociety.ca or lmsmarina.ca

SUMMARY:Bookbinding with Carolynn Dallaire
DESCRIPTION:Choose your own bookbinding adventure: register for all three workshops in the series to secure your place and save.\nChoose your own bookbinding adventure: register for all three workshops in the series to secure your place and save. Or\, if you prefer\, sign up for any of the individual workshops as described below. Each session is suitable for all levels\, and all materials are included!\nWe are following current COVID-19 regulations: Masks are mandatory inside the building\, and we will be checking for proof of full vaccination for participants born in 2009 or earlier.\nFour Book Medley – March 2 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM\nLearn three basic structures: pamphlet stitch\, stab binding and accordion assembly. We will create four unique projects using beautiful decorative papers\, book board\, sturdy card stock and heavier text papers. Come away with three notebooks and an accordion book with pockets\, each completed in a decorative way. This session serves as a great introduction to bookbinding but is not required before taking the other sessions.\nCoptic Stitched Journal – March 9 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM\nThe coptic stitched journal will be constructed from book boards covered with beautiful decorative paper and a book block with 128 pages of heavier text weight paper. We will sew the book together using waxed linen thread and the historical coptic and kettle stitching\, which are both beautiful and very strong. There will be a choice of plain or lined paper for the inside pages.\nArtist Journal – March 16 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM\nThis colourful 64-page journal is an enjoyable\, straight-forward project to make. The covers are a heavy\, but foldable\, paper\, and the inside pages are made from a large piece of light watercolour paper (Arches Text Wove) that will be already decorated on both sides with a colourful watercolour wash. We will ‘tear’ down the large paper into a usable page size and sew the cover and pages together using a french lace sewing style. The book\, measuring 5” wide by 6 1/2” tall\, is sturdy yet flexible\, colourful and most rewarding to fill. A decorative button or charm can be attached to the front cover.\nPlease bring the following tools for each session: a metal ruler\, pencil\, eraser\, and scissors.\nOptional tools to bring: cutting mat\, exacto knife\, awl\, bone folder (instructor will bring if you don’t have these).

SUMMARY:Pop-up event on April 5 celebrates Storybook Walk relaunch
DESCRIPTION:The Town of Ladysmith and Ladysmith Resources Centre Association are excited to announce the relaunch of the Storybook Walk at Kinsmen Park – a community-supported project promoting literacy and movement in the great outdoors. \nThe Storybook Walk recently celebrated its one-year anniversary since the unveiling of the first book on Family Day weekend 2021. \nIn celebration of this ongoing partnership and the goal of inspiring young readers\, a pop-up event is being organized on Tuesday\, April 5\, 2022 at the park by the LRCA – Adventures in Early Literacy program and the Town\, with support from Ladysmith Family and Friends (LaFF) as well as PacificCARE. \nThe Storybook Walk kick-off theme is ‘pen pals’ and Dear Dragon by Josh Funk was selected as the perfect book for all to read as they wander\, imagine and interact with nature. \nFurther promoting the kick-off theme\, PacificCARE is generously donating 100 letter-writing kits for the April 5 event for people to take home – but what’s a special handwritten note without someone to send it to? \nEach kit will include a name of a senior in our community who might wish to receive a letter.  You can lift up someone’s spirits\, kindle a passion for writing and maybe even make a new friend. \nThe Town and LRCA are continuing to plan and organize an ongoing series of pop-up events at Kinsmen Park for the duration of the year.  Each pop-up will complement the Storybook Walk theme and focus on bringing together community to promote physical literacy and reading. \nThe Storybook Walk is an initiative of the LRCA’s Adventures in Early Literacy program. New for 2022\, books will be selected bi-monthly and installed on Tuesdays. Join the Ladysmith Storybook Walk Facebook Group to learn about upcoming books\, contests\, special events and more! \nFor the latest news and updates\, visit the Town’s website at www.ladysmith.ca\, as well as Facebook\, Twitter and Instagram. \nYou can also receive up-to-date information in your email inbox by subscribing to the Town’s newsletter. \n
