“The song started as a fun time to honor the essential workers and how Ladysmith is working together to keep its community strong during the Spring 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. Sheila Richards, a 77-year-old Ladysmith resident, recorded the vocals at home, and sent them to her son, Dean Richards, who got the idea of producing an amusing song and video. Dean enlisted his long time friend Daniel J. K. Ross, an award-winning music composer for TV and movies, to play his version of “You Are my Sunshine” with “Dad” John Richards playing snare drum.

LYRICS

We are a family
We live in Ladysmith
We are isolated and alone
But never fear, folks,
We’ll beat this virus
As us islanders have back bones

We are strong and we are patient
For sure our town will survive
So give a cheer to our workers
Who keep our community alive

To our doctors, nurses and grocers
Working to keep us so strong
You are our sunshine
And Ladysmith thanks you
For helping our little town along

To our pharmacists
We are family
If you are lonely
Reach out to us
Let’s pull together, folks
We will get through this
Because we call Ladysmith our home
